Glow lures are nothing new to fishing tackle enthusiasts. Throughout the years the popularity for their use has varied from decade to decade. These days they are still popular in various parts of the world.

Why do glow lures have a following, and do they really make a difference? Proponents of glow lures for day time fishing feel that the glow lures which convert UV light from the sun into highly visible, almost neon light, will increase long – range visibility. This is because the deeper you go, even in crystal clear water the less light penetrates the water. Therefore the glow lures increase the contrast between the lures and their surroundings and allow for easy locating, tracking and attacking by predator fish always looking for baitfish that stand out from the crowd and look like an easy target. If the water is murky, better yet, as there is less light penetration to reflect off normal painted lures, the glow lures will illuminate themselves without the need for daylight to penetrate the murky water.

Jig panted in glow colours are popular among the jiggers, especially since they often send their jigs down deep over a hundred feet where the sunlight does not penetrate.

Glow painted crank baits are used by walleye fishermen (USA) both in the daytime and night time. Walleye can also be caught at night, as like the big eye trevally they have these big eyes to capture the little natural light during hours of darkness for the better vision. Spoon coated with glow painted are also used for fishing to catch salmon and trout. The list of species they use to catch fish is extensive. Glow lures are also found among soft plastics products. The glow chemicals are impregnated into the soft plastics.

Another common use of glow in lures in Malaysia that we often don‘t think about is found in the sabiki jigs(a.k.a. apollo). They are mini artificial lures that are use to hook up the small schooling fish like kembung, selar and cencaru . A glow bead is used the hook or the top of the hook is painted with glow paint.

The cyalume chemical light stick is another common glow method used by fishermen. Bottom fishermen often attach a mini light stick to the line near their bait to attract the fish. Swordfish fishermen use big light stick and insert them into their squid baits. Some crank bait lures are designed with a slot in the belly to place the mini light sticks to light up the lures.

Fly fishermen too use glow trimming on their flies. Some fly fishermen purist may be shocked but there are brown trout fishermen who add touches of glow to their streamer flies for night fishing as brown trout fedd during the hours of darkness.
